Goals range from reaching the ‘unbanked’ to achieving gender equality in financial services. Fintech solutions include encouraging the use of smart-phones for mobile payments, including the distribution of government payments, and digitising transactions more broadly.

The UK government’s procurement agency, the Crown Commercial Service (CCS), said in March 2021 that it was looking to ‘bring fintech to the fore’ as part of a newly created framework of ‘debt resolution’ providers (a ‘Debt Resolution Services’ supplier roster that all UK public sector bodies will be able to use to source specialist companies).

The UN Climate Change Conference (1 Nov-12 Nov 2021) will bring new ambition and targets to the increasingly recognised and urgent challenge of climate change. In this webinar we will seek to explore the growth in ‘green fintech’ solutions and ask how government policies can help encourage this growing sector. Examples in the UK have included the Financial Conduct Authority’s first ‘Green Fintech Challenge’ (in 2019) while the Department for International Trade is running a UK ESG and Green FinTech mission to the US from 20-30 September 2021.

The European Banking Authority (EBA) in June 2021 issued recommendations to support ‘sound adoption and scale-up’ of the use of RegTech – the use of technology to improve regulatory compliance. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), meanwhile wants to make Hong Kong a ‘leading hub’ for RegTech while the City of London Corporation (the municipal authority for London’s Square Mile) in April called for ‘urgent action’ to encourage greater use of RegTech.
