Government of Peru arrests 28 terror suspects

By on 25/04/2014

The government of Peru has arrested 28 leaders and members of a front organisation for the Shining Path terrorist group.

The arrests came after a concerted effort to track down members of the organisation, which has been formally designated by the US government as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation since 1997.

In the years since 1980, the Shining Path group has been responsible for attacks on US personnel and facilities as well as the reported deaths of tens of thousands of Peruvian nationals.

In a statement, the US Department of State said: “This successful effort exemplifies an admirable commitment to respect the rule of law and human rights, to patient and persistence criminal investigation work, and an effective ‘whole of government’ approach featuring coordination among judicial, police, armed forced and intelligence elements.”
