The chief executive of Britain’s tax authority has today announced she is stepping down from her role after 36 years in the public service.

Lin Homer, chief executive and permanent secretary at HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), will leave government in April.

Homer joined HMRC in January 2012 from the Department for Transport, where she was permanent secretary from 2011 to 12.

Before that, she worked as chief executive of the UK Border Agency for three years and the Border and Immigration Agency – also for three years.

Before joining central government, Homer spent 26 years in local government where her roles included that of Chief Executive of Birmingham City Council and Suffolk County Council.

She said: “After ten years as a chief executive and permanent secretary in the civil service, the start of the next spending review period seemed to be a sensible time to move on.

“HMRC is a critical organisation which does vital things – to collect the revenues to pay for public services, support families with targeted financial support and facilitate trade for UK businesses.

“I have found commitment to public service and dedication to customers among our people wherever I have been, coupled with a deep level of specialist expertise and operational excellence.”

A process is now underway to select a successor to Homer, who said that she is not actively seeking her next role and intends to take a break over the summer.
