Public Service Data Live conference to help unlock UK public sector transformation

Public servants from across the UK will come together on 14 September for a unique conference aimed at helping to improve how data is used across government and beyond to enhance services for citizens.
Public Service Data Live, which is supported by the UK government, will feature speakers including cabinet secretary Simon Case, Sue Bateman, the interim chief data officer at the Central Digital and Data Office in the Cabinet Office, and Alison Pritchard, the deputy national statistician and director general for data capability at the Office for National Statistics.
The event has been developed with assistance from senior figures across the UK government and wider public sector, with sessions created to meet the cabinet secretary’s aim of putting better use of data at the heart of government to help solve problems and design better public services.

Case, who is hosting the conference, will speak in a fireside chat on how the UK can become a world-leading civil service in the use of data in government, while other sessions will cover topics including how to make data sharing happen in the public sector, how data can be used to improve procurement and make government a smart customer, and how it can be used to both drive value for money in government spending, and used to create citizen centric services.
In a letter inviting civil servants to attend, Case said “there is a need for public services to continue to innovate as we respond to advances in technology, the threats we face, pressures on the public finances, and changes in our society and the public’s expectations”.
The use of data can make a “huge contribution to improving public services and improving outcomes for citizens”, he said, adding: “I am therefore excited to be hosting and speaking at Public Service Data Live on Thursday 14 September 2023. A new annual event bringing together data leaders from central and local government along with colleagues from the wider public service to share examples of innovation in the uses of data and data-driven decision-making.”
The event forms part of One Big Thing, a series of data training initiatives planned across the UK government from September, and Case added: “We want as many of you as possible to join in these discussions, take the opportunity to meet colleagues, share groundbreaking examples of using data in government and help us be a truly modern civil service.”
