The Global Government Summit

The Global Government Summit has just successfully met in Singapore. The Summit was run by Global Government Forum, hosted by Mr Peter Ong, Head of the Civil Service in Singapore, and featured Knowledge Partner McKinsey & Company.
Eight countries were represented, with delegates including Hans Back, Director, Swedish Civil Service; Tatiana Janeckova, Secretary General, Government Office of the Slovak Republic; Lord Gus O’Donnell, Former Cabinet Secretary and Head of the UK Civil Service; Dr Peter Bartodziej, Director, Central Services, German Federal Chancellery; and Coleen Volk, Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet, Canada.
The Global Government Summit provided a unique environment for heads of central governments to have candid and intimate discussions, together with leading industry professionals. It was agreed that the quality of the people in the room made for a very stimulating Summit.
Highlights of this year’s Summit came from discussions inspired by presentations from Andrew Grant of McKinsey & Company with their global perspective on the future of the civil service, alongside current social and economic trends. Heiki Loot, State Secretary of Estonia, and Singapore Government CIO Chan Cheow Hoe each presented best-practice case studies from their respective countries. This led to a group discussion about the future of digital government.
Paul Jenkins, former Head of the UK Government Legal Service, guided delegates through the various governance challenges and Lord Gus O’Donnell presented thought-leading insight on measuring citizens’ individual wellbeing and how it can be usefully applied to policymaking.
Kevin Sorkin, Director of Global Government Forum, said: ‘The Summit is an important place to hold strategic discussions on the future of national governments. These discussions are set against the backdrop of the similar global and domestic challenges faced by public sectors around the world. The open and candid sharing was a very positive feature, leaving delegates feeling inspired.’
Mr Özer Kontoǧlu, Deputy undersecretary of Prime Ministry, Prime Ministry Republic of Turkey, summed up delegates’ feelings after the Summit:
‘We had the opportunity to learn what experts in public administration think about contemporary issues, and new trends. I have taken away new ideas.’
